Automatic capture

Entries that add themselves.

Logging every purchase is where most budgets fail. tamaru can do it for you, without ever asking for your bank password.

Apple Pay on iPhone

Add one Shortcuts automation, and every Apple Pay payment reaches tamaru with its amount, merchant and card, right after you pay.

Bank notifications on Android

Choose your banking apps, and tamaru turns their purchase notifications into entries. It reads only the apps you pick, and never stores the notification text.

Receipts

Snap or share a receipt, and tamaru reads the total, date and merchant on your phone. The photo is read in memory and never saved.

Everything in the app

A full money toolkit, on one phone.

No bank connection needed. tamaru captures what you spend and shows you what it adds up to.

A ledger you can actually search

Log expenses, income and transfers between your own accounts. Search titles and notes, and filter by type, category, account or month. Deleted something by mistake? Undo it.

Budgets per category

Set a monthly limit for any category. tamaru shows when you're on track, when you pass 80%, and when you go over. Limits reset on the 1st.

Recurring bills, spotted for you

Track weekly, biweekly, twice-monthly, monthly, quarterly and yearly payments. Mark one paid in a tap, skip it or pause it. tamaru also points out entries that look recurring in your history.

Insights that explain the month

See spending, income, net and savings rate compared with last month. Follow your running total against last month, spot heavy days on a spending calendar, and see which categories and merchants take the most. Add a note to remember what happened.

A forecast for month end

Using your recent pace and your usual spending on each day of the week, tamaru estimates where the month will land, with a likely range.

Savings goals

Set a target with an optional date, and tamaru tells you how much to set aside each month. Add or withdraw money as life happens.

Debts, with a payoff plan

Record each debt's APR, minimum payment and due day, and see how long paying the minimum takes and what it costs in interest. Compare snowball and avalanche plans, with an optional extra payment each month.

Quincenas, card cycles and MSI

Paid on the 15th and at month end? Set a twice-monthly payday, adjusted for weekends, and see what's left until the next one. Add your card's statement and due dates to see exactly what to pay to avoid interest, and track meses sin intereses purchases month by month.

Bill reminders

Get a heads-up before rent, subscriptions, card payments and installments are due, at the time you choose. Pick whether reminders show the name, the name and amount, or nothing at all. With the app lock on, they never show either.

Quick add from anywhere

Widgets, Siri and Shortcuts on iPhone, the Quick Settings tile and the share sheet on Android, and your voice, recognized on your phone.

Accounts and 40 currencies

Keep cash, checking, savings and credit cards apart, each with its own starting balance. Log entries in any of 40 currencies, with optional exchange rates for 30 of them.

Categories that fit your life

Start with 20 built-in categories, then add your own with an icon and color. Reorder or archive them, and move entries elsewhere before you delete one.

Privacy

What leaves your phone.

Almost nothing. There's no tamaru server to send your data to. Here is the full list.

Data Leaves your phone?
Entries, budgets, goals, debts, notes Never
Bank notifications, receipt photos, your voice Never. Processed on your phone, then discarded
Account, email or sign-in There isn't one
Analytics, crash reports, ads None in the app
Exchange rates Optional · off by default Only if you turn rates on. tamaru then sends your main currency code, and nothing else, to Frankfurter (European Central Bank rates) over HTTPS. Like any web request, it reveals your IP address to that service.

App lock

Unlock with fingerprint, Face ID or your device passcode. tamaru locks again after 30 seconds in the background.

Encrypted storage

On Android, the database is encrypted with SQLCipher using a 256-bit key protected by the Android Keystore. On iPhone, it's protected by iOS Data Protection.

Out of sight

Tap your balance to hide every amount. Widgets, notifications and Siri follow the same setting, tamaru stays covered in the app switcher, and on Android it blocks screenshots by default.

Your data

Your records, in files you control.

Nothing is stored in our cloud, so you decide where copies go.

  • Encrypted automatic backups

Back up daily or weekly to a folder you choose, such as iCloud Drive or a folder on your phone. Each backup is encrypted with a recovery phrase or a passphrase of your own.

  • Restore

Move to a new phone by restoring a backup with your phrase. Restoring replaces the data currently on that device.

  • Markdown, hledger and CSV

Write monthly summaries as Markdown for Obsidian or Notion, export a journal for plain-text accounting, or open your entries in any spreadsheet.

  • Delete everything

Erase all data in one step. You confirm by typing delete.

FAQ

Questions, answered plainly.

Does tamaru connect to my bank?

No, and it never asks for your bank login. On iPhone, it can log your Apple Pay payments through a Shortcuts automation. On Android, it can read purchase notifications from the banking apps you choose. Both happen on your phone.

Is tamaru powered by AI?

No. Quick add is a set of rules that runs on your phone and learns your categories from past entries. Voice input and receipt scanning use on-device recognition: your phone's own speech recognizer, Apple's Vision on iPhone, and the open-source Tesseract engine built into the Android app. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Can I use tamaru on two devices?

There's no sync. To move your data, restore an encrypted backup on the other device. Restoring replaces the data already on that device.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Restore your latest automatic backup on your new phone with your recovery phrase or passphrase. tamaru has no server copy, so without a backup, or without the phrase, your records can't be recovered.

Which devices and languages are supported?

Android 10 or later and iOS 17 or later. The app is available in English, Spanish, German, French and Korean, and follows your system's light or dark theme unless you pick one.

How much does it cost?

$9.99, paid once when you download it (US price; each store sets the local price). Every feature and future updates are included. There are no subscriptions, in-app purchases or ads. Refunds are handled by Google Play or the App Store under their policies.
